When Marco Silva explained Everton’s meeting West Ham United as”have to win”, he wasn’t only adhering out a cliche – that he had been hoisting a warning signal to get his own perilous position.
Even the Portuguese is under pressure after a run of four Premier League defeats plunged a club with ambitions that are top-four into the relegation places.
It is not what the billionaire majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri of Everton had in mind when he sanctioned another significant summer outlay in the transfer marketplace. It means Saturday’s match at Goodison Park is a crucial evening for Silva.
Not necessarily – because a real desire is at Everton to provide every chance to Silva.
The brutal reality, however, dictates a comprehensive defeat on the Hammers, and the response to it, may induce the hand of Everton.
Silva’s own words about 5 October following a 1-0 defeat at Burnley, where thousands of fans made their feelings called the manager walked into the area, representing that the seriousness of his situation.

Moshiri once clarified England’s north-west since the”Hollywood of football”. He has spent over #450m trying to create Everton part of the glamour.
Moyes, for all his outstanding work, did not win a prize in 11 years at Goodison. Moshiri’s strategies would be hardly suited by bringing him back, particularly given that the success that Jurgen Klopp is bringing to Liverpool.
When Koeman was but in this stage, former Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta was discussed, could he be enticed to Pep Guardiola in Manchester City away from his position as man? He’s still untested as a manager.
Some have, touted now out of work, jose Mourinho but this definitely resides in the realms of dream. Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez’s title has gained traction among a number of fans.
A boyhood Everton fan, eddie Howe, seems to enjoy life on the coast at Bournemouth much and couldn’t be lured this season.
So could the longer term alternative come from abroad, marcel Brands is a keen student of the European match? Marco Rose did so well at Red Bull Salzburg and has guided Borussia Monchengladbach towards the top of the Bundesliga in the first stages his very first time, and contains a reference from Klopp. Or there may be a candidate from Brands’ native Netherlands?
Jumps from the page – that may simply be the saving grace for now of Silva.
Moshiri, who owns 77.23% of Everton’s 35,000 stocks, will have the last sign off but manufacturers will have a significant state too.
Brands, who came shortly before Silva, combined Everton’s board in January when, according to chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale, that he had been awarded”a broader remit responsible for the entire footballing strategy at the club instead of simply participant recruiting”.
In other words, Brands is the footballing figure in Everton. In addition, he provides a comparison to the impulsive Moshiri.
Brands wants to keep emotion out of decision-making while Moshiri has shown an inclination to bend to the will of supporters, particularly during times of discontent, and has sacked Roberto Martinez, Koeman and Allardyce since purchasing a 49.9% stake from Everton at February 2016.
Although his shareholding is currently only 5%, chairman Bill Kenwright may have input.
It could be, but that Brands’ word will form which manner proprietor Moshiri goes when deciding Silva’s future.
Silva fashioned a revival at the end of last year that saw Everton finish in eighth position, with home victories over Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United and a draw that damaged Liverpool’s title hopes, all without conceding a goal.
Worryingly, Everton have shown this season to none of defensive durability and that attacking verve, sparking only temporarily in the 3-2 home triumph on 1 September.
Idrissa Gueye has been missed in midfield after leaving for Paris St-Germain, exposing a defence stripped of Kurt Zouma, that looked a whole lot more solid playing loan in Everton than he’s at Chelsea this year.
Gylfi Sigurdsson has been nearly imperceptible, with striker Richarlison not far behind despite two goals against Wolves.
Silva has failed to incorporate Moise Kean despite the 19-year-old’s capture from Juventus being hailed by some as this summer’s move coup.
It has left Silva relying greatly on Dominic Calvert-Lewin for targets, and consistent marksmanship isn’t one of them for all of the young striker’s many attributes.
Silva seems bolted to his 4-2-3-1 system, powerless to flip and stiff matches which get away from his team.
The main issues are a lack of stomach for a battle and people defensive failings that are old.
Everton’s questionable the manager inability to turn the wave, as well as character, is reflected in statistics.
They turned it up to win after, against League One Lincoln City at the Carabao Cup, going to reduce 20 matches and have gone under Silva in 26 games.
Behind 23 days, winning none of these games and dropping 19, Everton have gone in the Premier League.
